Overview

Radiologists are sued for a number of reasons.  The most frequent allegation is a missed or delayed diagnosis.  The Physician Insurers Association of America found that diagnostic errors comprised 62 percent of claims brought against radiologists, and 76 percent of claims that resulted in indemnity payment.  Clearly, errors in diagnosis are a significant problem for radiology.  Other sources of error include complications with diagnostic procedures; improper care and treatment; falls; equipment failures; adverse reactions to contrast media; and other less frequent problems.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, a physician should be able to:


1. Name the four elements of malpractice.
2. Identify the six most common causes of action against radiologists.
3. Discuss risk management strategies in radiology.
4. Comfortably handle common situations that could place radiologists at risk.


Target Audience

This course is designed for radiologists who want to limit their liability and improve patient safety.

Methodology

This is a self-study course consisting of text and CME test.  Physicians should read the course content, answer the test questions and submit the answers for scoring.  Those who complete the course with a score of 80 percent or higher will earn a maximum of 5 AMA PRA Category 1 creditsTM.
